Also, no, Mastodon is not developed by a single person, it has 451 contributors.
And no, Mastodon is not the only one decentralization effort, and certainly not the first. Try GnuSocial and Friendica which existed long before Mastodon (with which Mastodon is actually compatible) and also projects like Diaspora*, with their own proto.
This guy clearly has little understanding of what he's talking about.
@drequivalent @kurtm yes, encryption and blockchains are completely separate... And most Mastodon messages are public, not private. And if you wanted to encrypt direct messages you'd have to do it within the app (and deal with key management!), if you encrypt on the server it's just security theatre lol

@Gargron @kurtm And though I liked the idea of protecting valuable data (like personal messages) with crypto, I don't think this couldn't be done without some kind of blockchain- or currency-related stuff. And I definitely don't think this needs marketing of any sort.
(disclaimer: I don't dislike blockchains or cryptocurrencies, I just don't think they are necessary here. when you boil it down really hard, Fediverse is just a messaging system, and they've been around without it alright forever)
